Former King鈥檚 College London president Sir Ed Byrne to lead KAUST

Ex-Monash v-c to succeed Tony Chan at rising Saudi Arabian institution next month

Sir Ed Byrne, the former leader of King鈥檚 College London and Monash University, is聽heading to聽Saudi Arabia as聽the next president of King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST).

The neuroscientist, who was vice-chancellor of聽Monash from 2009 to聽2014 and then King鈥檚 principal from 2014 to聽the end of聽2020, will replace Tony Chan at聽KAUST next month.

Since its foundation in 2009, the private postgraduate-only campus in Thuwal has established itself as聽one of聽the world鈥檚 fastest-rising research institutions, topping the 探花视频 Arab University Rankings for the first time in聽2023.

Sir聽Ed is now an emeritus professor of neurology at King鈥檚. Previously, he was dean of Monash鈥檚 Faculty of Medicine, and vice-provost (health) at UCL.

Professor Chan, the former president of Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), had led KAUST since 2018. KAUST鈥檚 other former presidents are Jean-Lou Chameau (2013-17) and Shih Choon Fong (2008-13).
