Noakhali Science and Technology University was established in 2006. It was the fifth institution created by the national government programme to bring higher education to districts without universities, and Bangladesh’s fifth university of science and technology.
It operates from a 101 hectare campus in Sonapur, five miles south of Maijdee, administrative headquarters of the Noakhali district of south-east Bangladesh, close to the Bay of Bengal.
Starting with degree courses in fisheries and marine science, pharmacy, microbiology and chemical engineering, it has developed so that around 10,000 students are now spread across faculties of engineering and technology, science, social science and humanities, biological sciences, business administration, education and law.
Its two specialised institutes focus on information science and information technology, while particular strengths in fisheries, marine science and oceanography both serve and reflect a local economy based on agriculture and fishing.
