Description

The Center for Sand Hazards and Opportunities in Resilience, Energy, and Sustainability (SHORES)?and the Division of Engineering, New York University Abu Dhabi, seek to recruit a Postdoctoral?Associate to work on a fascinating project focused on the development machine-learning powered digital twin system for the structural performance of civil engineering structures. The project is a?collaboration between multiple research groups led primarily by Professor Tarek Abdoun and Professor Mostafa Mobasher. It involves a diverse range of activities including: structural and geotechnical modeling, machine-learning model development, structural sensing and health?monitoring, conducting physical experiments, and validation of computational models.

Required Qualifications:

A successful applicant must have a PhD in Civil Engineering, Engineering Mechanics, or Mechanical Engineering. Applicants are expected to demonstrate research experience in the fields of structural modeling and machine-learning model development.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience in the following will be preferred:


	The development of computational models to represent structural performance using commercial and research software tools
	The development and validation of machine learning and artificial intelligence models focused on representing the structural response
	Physical experimental testing for structural and geotechnical applications

Doctoral Researcher in Sustainable Renewable Energy Engineering, Modeling and Optimization

Department of Energy and Mechanical Engineering is a community of around 300 staff members – including 30 tenure track professors – assembled to research, teach, create, and develop solutions for society’s needs. Key research areas include marine and arctic technology; energy technologies and systems; mechanical systems and mechatronics; and materials, manufacturing, and product development. We have strong links to industry, creating lasting impact in both business and society.

We are now looking for a Doctoral Researcher to study the development of sustainable hydrogen valleys. The four year project is fully funded by Research Council of Finland. The work can be started immediately.

Your role and goals

Your main objective is to develop a simulation and optimization model of a large hydrogen valley operating in off-grid mode (having also an option for grid connection). As outputs the model should give sustainable and optimal capacities of system components (wind power plants, electrolyzers, P2X plants, data centers, transmission system for power H2, CO2 and heat, energy storages, etc.) and their optimal locations. Our aim is to maximize the sustainable production capacity of green hydrogen and e-fuels within the studied area. The model needs to consider variability of weather conditions and price variation of electricity and district heat. The solution is restricted by biodiversity loss, social acceptability and cultural boundary conditions, defined together with the research team of energy engineers, social scientists, ecologists, and landscape architects. Our ultimate research question is: How much green hydrogen and e-fuels can be produced on sustainable level within a defined area, and can we still have a competitive selling price of products?

As part of your doctoral researcher duties, you will also gain experience on teaching and supervision of Master’s level students. Your thesis is composed of minimum 3 peer-reviewed research articles.

Your network and team

You will be working in the Energy Conversion and Systems research group. We are a large and active team of 120 persons and 10 professors. You supervising professor will be Mika J?rvinen. You will closely collaborate with other researchers in the team. In the research project, you need to be able to communicate with researchers from different disciplines, including ecology, social sciences and landscape architects. In addition, you need to collaborate and work together with our stakeholders which include One Planet (Kari&Pantzar), BalticSeaH2 hydrogen valley and representatives of study regions of North-Ostrobothnia and Kainuu in Finland.

Lingnan University

We are looking to make several hires on two new projects related to the interaction of mental health and polarization. We welcome applications at both postdoc and doctoral levels. The projects run for 4 years, and the starting date for the positions is flexible. The duration of the doctoral positions is 4 years, but the length of the postdoc position is negotiable.

The positions are in the Department of Computer Science at Aalto University in Finland. You will be joining a larger group of researchers working on similar topics. The department has a strong community on related topics: research groups working on digital health and wellbeing,? network science, computational social science, and various topics in machine learning.

You will be working in the research group of one of the PIs of the projects, but in collaboration with the others. The PIs are Talayeh Aledavood, Juhi Kulshrestha, and Mikko Kivel?.

About the projects

Political polarization and mental health are deeply intertwined challenges of our time, with rising ideological divides and fragmented information ecosystems coinciding with increasing stress, anxiety, and declining well-being. Polarizing online content not only fuels division and erodes trust but also provokes emotional strain, amplifies loneliness, and threatens resilience. At the same time, mental health vulnerabilities can heighten individuals’ susceptibility to divisive narratives, creating a reinforcing feedback loop between societal fragmentation and personal well-being. Addressing this dual crisis requires a holistic, interdisciplinary approach that bridges computational social science and computational mental health to capture fine-grained behavioral data,? uncover underlying mechanisms,? and design interventions that reduce harm, promote healthier information consumption, and strengthen both individual and collective resilience.

1. POLEMIC: POLarization Entangled with Mental well-being: Integrated and Computational approach to quantifying the underlying feedback loop

The POLEMIC project investigates the dynamic entanglement of political polarization and declining mental well-being by integrating computational mental health and computational social science, using large-scale social media analysis, smartphone-based sensing, and agent-based modeling. Combining macro-level patterns with micro-level behavioral data, it will examine how polarized content influences stress, anxiety, depression, and loneliness, and how mental health vulnerabilities increase susceptibility to polarization. Leveraging network science, NLP, behavioral sensing, and causal inference, the project pioneers new methods for detecting and mitigating online harms. Its results aim to inform public health, policy, and technology design, promoting resilience and empowering individuals to understand and counteract their exposure to polarizing content.

2. PolWell: Mental Health & Wellbeing in the Age of Polarizing Web Content

The PolWell project investigates the fragmented information ecosystems and polarizing online content that deepens divides, provokes strong emotions, and reinforces biases by going beyond the previous research,? which has been limited to relying on biased self-reports and cross-sectional data. This project takes a novel, interdisciplinary approach, combining fine-grained web-browsing data, validated psychological scales, online experiments, and qualitative interviews to uncover both correlational and causal links between online polarization and a multidimensional perspective on mental health and wellbeing. Using advanced methods in statistical modeling, NLP, HCI, and experimental design, it will also test interventions, such as visual cues, to reduce harm and foster healthier browsing, delivering actionable insights for policymakers, mental health professionals, and platform designers.

The post holder will develop new concepts and ideas and will be expected, where appropriate, to develop and win support for innovative research and/or teaching development proposals and funding bids. The post holder will make a significant contribution to their academic unit via leadership and/or administrative management and/or co-ordination of specific initiatives.

Salary will be within the range of 635,038 RMB to 780,622 RMB (Associate Professor) or RMB 450,190 to RMB 592,815 (Assistant Professor) per annum,?depending on qualifications and experience (salary progression beyond this is subject to performance). In addition, an attractive package including employment support allowance, schooling and insurance will be provided for international appointments.

The post will initially be offered on a fixed term contract with the University of Nottingham Ningbo China for a period of up to 5 years with effect from January 2026 or thereafter as soon as possible. This contract may be extended by mutual agreement, subject to revised terms and conditions.
