The American University of Ras Al Khaimah was established in 2005 as a branch campus of George Mason University, Virginia. Since 2009 it has been a public institution accredited by the United Arab Emirates Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research. 
The university is based in Ras al Khaimah, 45 minutes from Dubai. The campus is located between the Red Sea and the Hajar Mountains 
It was accredited in 2022 by the UK’s Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education. 
It offers degree courses in biotechnology, mass communication, architecture, interior design, artificial intelligence, computer science, seven branches of business and nine engineering courses. The university also offers seven graduate programmes including an MBA and a masters in engineering project management . All courses are taught in English. English courses are offered at four different levels including a four-month preparatory course. 
It counts 46 different nationalities among a small student body. Students are sign up to an honour code and are housed in four residences, two male and two female, with studio apartments. Facilities include an information technology laboratory and the entrepreneurship centre, which will incubate up to 16 start-up companies.

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow to join an exciting research project related to improving the recovery of phosphate from flotation tailings using process mineralogy. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to lead and conduct research at the intersection of process mineralogy, mineral processing, and artificial intelligence in a collaboration between Geology and Sustainable Mining Institute (UM6P, Morocco), and Mineral-X (Stanford University, USA).

Qualifications?


	PhD in process mineralogy, mineral processing, mining, chemical or geological engineering, or a PhD in a related field with mining/mineral processing experience.
	Knowledge of process mineralogy, froth flotation through past research, coursework, or job experience.?
	Proficiency in programming (Python, Julia) (provide evidence with specific examples).
	Experience with statistical modelling and experimental design.?
	Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team.
	Strong written and oral communication skills.?


1. Context and objectives

Process mineralogy is a discipline that has recently been used for diagnosing and improving ore processing flowsheets such as flotation. It is well known that flotation performance depends on several intrinsic and extrinsic parameters. The intrinsic parameters of the process include, among others, the type of reagents, their dosages, the solid concentration, and the air flow rate. However, the extrinsic parameters include the properties of the ore to be floated, namely its particle size distribution, the degree of mineral liberation, mineral associations, and the surface properties of the minerals. In general, a mineral cannot be floated even if the processing conditions are optimized if it is locked (encapsulated). To improve flotation recovery, regardless of process parameters, it is essential to conduct a physical, chemical, and mineralogical analysis of the tailings to study the distribution of phosphates and their relationships with gangue minerals such as silicates and carbonates.

2. Main tasks

The selected candidate will work on:


	Process-mineralogical characterization of the feed, concentrate, and flotation tailings.
	Testing the effectiveness of different grinding energies on phosphate liberation within flotation tailings.
	Developing an AI-driven intelligent framework to optimize grinding time to enhance phosphate liberation with minimum slime generation.?
	Design of laboratory flotation tests to optimize process parameters.

	Undertake original research of international excellence.

About UM6P:

About the Chemical & Biochemical Sciences Green Process Engineering (CBS)

The Chemical & Biochemical Sciences Green Process Engineering Department (CBS) is a component of the Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P). The main objective of CBS is to set up a distinctive research-teaching program, of international level, to meet the research and teaching challenges of UM6P, on green and environmental chemistry applied to all aspects of chemical sciences: organic and inorganic chemistry, analytical chemistry, chemical biology, biochemical and thermal reactions.

Job Description

We are seeking a postdoctoral researcher specialized in membrane processes, with particular expertise in chemical cleaning and fouling control of reverse osmosis membranes. The selected candidate will contribute to an in-depth study of organic, colloidal, biological, and inorganic fouling mechanisms, the optimization of cleaning protocols (CIP – Cleaning in Place), and the development of sustainable solutions to extend membrane lifespan while maintaining optimal performance.

Special attention will be given to evaluating the effectiveness of cleaning agents, their chemical compatibility with membrane materials, and minimizing the environmental impact of cleaning operations.

Key Responsibilities:

The selected candidate will conduct research on fouling mechanisms in reverse osmosis membranes, including organic, colloidal, biological, and inorganic types. They will be responsible for developing and optimizing effective, sustainable, and chemically compatible cleaning-in-place (CIP) protocols. Particular attention will be given to evaluating cleaning efficiency through performance indicators and advanced characterization techniques. The candidate will also work on proposing environmentally friendly cleaning strategies aimed at reducing chemical usage and extending membrane lifespan. In addition, they will contribute to the design and monitoring of pilot-scale cleaning systems and support the supervision of junior researchers, while actively participating in the dissemination and valorization of research outcomes.

	PhD in Chemistry, with a specialization in inorganic chemistry, water treatment, or a related field. Experience related to membrane cleaning and fouling management is highly desirable.
	Research excellence demonstrated in the fields of desalination, water treatment, or sustainable membrane processes, with a particular focus on fouling and membrane cleaning, supported by publications in reputable international scientific journals.
	Collaborative Mindset: Proven ability to collaborate effectively with interdisciplinary teams and external partners to address complex challenges.
