The mathematician Sir Michael Atiyah is to be the next president of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, succeeding Lord Sutherland, former principal of Edinburgh University, in October. Sir Michael will become the second person to have been president of both the RSE and the Royal Society in London, the first being Lord Kelvin.
