Higher Education has overtaken heavy industry as one of Newcastle's top employers, according to research from Northumbria University. Local Impact of the University of Northumbria, from the University's Northern Economic Research Unit, boasts that the university is the fifth largest employer in Newcastle, employing 3,000 full-time and part-time staff.
