THE UNIVERSITY of Wales council has approved a reorganisation of academic structures, including the devolution of several functions to the eight member institutions. It is hoped the change will end a long period of tension between institutions and the central university, which some feared would lead to the break-up of the federation. The reforms also meet criticisms of the university's structure made in a Higher Education Funding Council for Wales report in 1994.
