The research paper Falling down Ladders and Charming Snakes referred to in the news report "Project lifts the hood on male dropouts" ( Times Higher , July 1) was undertaken by four universities - Staffordshire, Paisley, Glamorgan and Ulster - and was funded by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation.
