Working closely with the Chair of Council, Lord Stevens of Birmingham, and the Vice-Chancellor & President, Professor Shitij Kapur, the University Secretary & Director of Assurance, Dr Sinéad Critchley, leads the Office of the Chairman and College Secretariat (OCCS). The Office comprises three key teams: Governance, Legal Services, and Audit and Assurance, each with a senior management lead. Collectively, OCCS is responsible for the effective running of governance across King’s, serving Council and its committees, supporting the Chair and Vice-Chancellor & President as a trusted advisor and a link between the non-executive and executive functions of the University, building assurance and compliance networks across King’s, supporting and contributing to strategic direction and ensuring compliance across a wide range of statutory, regulatory and policy requirements. Through the legal services team, OCCS oversees relevant activities governed by European/international legislation and contracts as well as specific agreements with partner establishments.

The Legal Services team currently consists of the General Counsel & Director of Legal Services and two Legal Counsel. The team provides legal advice to the whole College, manages the work and instructions of our external panel of law firms and oversees the College’s legal spend.

About the role:

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Junior Legal Counsel, ideally with a specialism in Employment Law, to join the Legal Services team.

The Junior Legal Counsel will work with the Legal Counsel (HR) and be responsible for providing high quality, considered and pragmatic legal advice across employment related matters. However the role holder will also need to provide advice on staff and student matters, education contracts, academic partnerships, dispute management and regulatory compliance, as well as delivering training and guidance materials to staff.

The Junior Legal Counsel will report to the General Counsel and Director of Legal Services and support the other Legal Counsel in the continued development of a legal team recognised for delivering excellent advice and support for the College.

This is a full time (35 hours per week), and you will be offered an indefinite contract.

	Qualified to practice as a solicitor or barrister in England and Wales.?
	Post qualification experience in a range of areas of law such as contract, charity, education, and commercial law but with a particular specialism in employment law. ??

	Developed legal skills including drafting legal documents, researching, negotiation, advocacy and interviewing.??

We have one prestigious PhD scholarship between La Trobe University and Diamond Light Source (DLS) available for outstanding candidates with a background in Physics, Engineering, or Computer Science. The project: Synchrotrons and X-ray Free-Electron Lasers (XFELs) are large-scale research facilities that generate exceptionally bright X-ray beams for studying the structure and function of matter across diverse fields, including energy materials, catalysis, and biomedical systems. Experiments are conducted at “beamlines,” complex optical systems designed to condition the X-ray beam for scientific investigation. This project will develop a software model of a synchrotron and/or XFEL beamline using platforms such as SimEx-Lite to simulate key optical features and explore optimal alignment of beamline components. The resulting data will be used to train a machine learning (ML) model, enabling automated and efficient beamline alignment. This technology has the potential to significantly enhance the operational efficiency of synchrotrons and XFELs. A supervisory team of experts from La Trobe University and leading international facilities will guide the project, with opportunities for travel to the UK and Germany for implementation and testing.
