Fifty-six universities have signed a joint statement promising cooperation on the United Nations鈥 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, as the world faces unprecedented post-Covid challenges.
鈥淲ith their unique advantages in generating knowledge, uniting stakeholders and enabling transformation, leading universities around the world should play an active and essential role in forging a sustainable future through dialogue, solidarity and collaboration,鈥 said , announced at a Zhejiang University (窜闯鲍)听听on 24 March.
An institution鈥檚 civic responsibility was 鈥渁 matter of fundamental morality鈥, Rocky Tuan, vice-chancellor of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), told听探花视频听on the sidelines of the forum. He called the UN鈥檚 sustainable development goals (SDGs) 鈥減ractical and intellectual channels to focus academic activities鈥.
Professor Tuan told the forum that international collaboration was vital to reaching the UN鈥檚 varied goals.

鈥淚t鈥檚 like a multiple-choice test where the last option is 鈥榓ll of the above鈥. Partnerships are needed to achieve 鈥榓ll of the above鈥,鈥 he said. 鈥淩esearch excellence must include global partnerships if we are going to achieve SDGs.鈥
CUHK, which opened a social responsibility and sustainability office in January, has set a goal of being carbon neutral by 2038.

鈥淯niversities need to go beyond teaching, learning and research,鈥 he said. 鈥淭hey should voluntarily go beyond what the legal requirements are.鈥
Wu Zhaohui, ZJU鈥檚 president, said that the world was facing a 鈥渃ritical moment鈥 and was 鈥渕ore conflicted than it was before鈥, a situation exacerbated by the Covid pandemic. Therefore, it was important for universities to link 鈥渢he global to the local鈥.
鈥淚f we want to change the world, we have to change ourselves first through our daily operations,鈥 he said.
For example, ZJU鈥檚 International Campus is surrounded by wetlands and designed as a 鈥渟ponge campus鈥, where rainwater is collected and reused for irrigation.

鈥淪ustainability is as important as teaching and learning,鈥 said ZJU vice-president听He Lianzhen.
Tan Eng Chye, president of the National University of Singapore, said that 鈥渢he complexity of the SDGs requires integrated solutions and coordinated actions鈥. Two examples he offered were NUS鈥 U Town campus and a retrofit of their School of Design and Environment.
鈥淭he campus should work as a 鈥榣iving lab鈥 and be a constant reminder to students and staff,鈥 Professor Tan said. 鈥淚t will be a sandbox for sustainability practices.鈥
NUS, located in a tropical climate, has goals to reduce campus temperatures by four degrees Celsius, plant 10,000 trees a year, and be carbon neutral by 2030.

Pam Fredman, president of the International Association of Universities, emphasised the need for governments and societies to recognise and support their higher education institutions.
The key roles that universities play in sustainability have to be 鈥減romoted to policy- and decision-makers鈥, especially given how much institutions suffered this year due to Covid-related travel bans and funding cuts, she said.
