England鈥檚 higher education regulator is聽launching a聽new 鈥渟tudent interest board鈥, which will incorporate students鈥 unions and university staff as聽well as聽current learners.

for the new Office for Students committee, which will replace the watchdog鈥檚 existing student panel.

The OfS said the membership would be 鈥渁聽mix of聽students, staff and officers from students鈥 unions, staff from universities and colleges who work on student issues, and others who can share on students鈥 interests鈥.

The shift responds to long-running criticism of the regulator鈥檚 engagement with students. The independent review of the OfS by Sir聽David Behan 鈥 now the organisation鈥檚 interim chair 鈥 concluded that 鈥渢here was broad consensus that student voice and perspective was noticeably absent from the OfS鈥.

In his report, Sir David criticised a聽鈥渓ack of meaningful engagement with student bodies鈥, including the National Union of Students and campus students鈥 unions, and said the existing panel was 鈥渘ot a聽source of intelligence on student priorities鈥, and as such members 鈥渂elieved they did not have the opportunity to input on the issues they felt were most important to students鈥.

The OfS said the new student interest board would be a committee of the main OfS board, as recommended by Sir聽David.

Susan Lapworth, the OfS鈥 chief executive, said the new board was 鈥渁聽critical part of our new approach to working with students鈥.

鈥淚t will provide us with a diverse range of experiences and insight from students, from those working in policy development, and from people with experience of working with and for students,鈥 Ms聽Lapworth said.

鈥淭his mix of members will ensure we鈥檙e hearing strong student voices, and also the contributions of those who work closely with students, and who can bring their experiences and expertise to our work.

鈥淚鈥檇 encourage anyone who is committed to working with us to improve the experiences of students across the country to apply.鈥

The OfS is a parasitic organization, encourages nothing but bureaucracy and waste in the section, harms innovation and students. It is too bad the new government went for a 鈥渞evamp鈥 and change of chair rather than just scrapping it altogether and trusting UK universities to manage their own affairs subject to a light touch regime.
