The United Arab Emirates claims to have opened the world鈥檚 first graduate-level university focusing on artificial intelligence.

The Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence, in Abu Dhabi, will offer MSc and PhD courses in machine learning, computer vision and natural language processing.

It will be led by interim president Sir Michael Brady, emeritus professor of oncological imaging at the University of Oxford, while its board of trustees includes AI experts from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Michigan State University and Tsinghua University.

Sir Michael, who was knighted in 2004, said society was 鈥渘ow at a turning point in the widespread application of advanced intelligence鈥 and the new university would 鈥渟upport students to capture those opportunities and to magnify their contribution to the field of AI globally鈥.

All admitted students will be offered a full scholarship, which includes a monthly allowance, health insurance and accommodation. The university is also working with leading local and global companies to secure internships, it says.

Sultan聽Al Jaber, UAE鈥檚 minister of state, who has been appointed chair of the university鈥檚 board of trustees, said the institution would 鈥渂ring the discipline of AI into the forefront, moulding and empowering creative pioneers who can lead us to a new AI empowered era鈥.

In 2017, the UAE government was the first in the world to appoint a minister for AI and it estimates that AI development will account for about 14 per cent of UAE鈥檚 gross domestic product by 2030.

鈥淎I can lead to an ever greater societal and economic transformation, but first we must ensure we have the right infrastructure, talents and academic institutions,鈥 said Dr Al Jaber, who added that the university鈥檚 launch was a 鈥渃lear demonstration of the UAE鈥檚 commitment to encouraging innovation and empowering younger generations in the UAE and around the world鈥.
