Seeing red: lecturers have resorted to a technique used in primary schools

Students鈥 in-class behaviour is sometimes so bad that lecturers are resorting to a red and yellow card warning system 鈥 a technique sometimes used by primary schoolteachers.

Undergraduates would 鈥減ush the teacher as much as they could鈥 so lecturers were having to police their behaviour in ways 鈥測ou wouldn鈥檛 even expect in secondary school鈥, according to a study of 鈥渓addism鈥 among sports science students.

Carolyn Jackson, a professor in the department of educational research at Lancaster University, observed lecturers and interviewed students and academics at a large post-1992 institution in the south of England between 2011 and 2013.

鈥淟addish鈥 behaviour included 鈥渢alking and generally being loud (which disrupted classes); being a聽joker; throwing stuff; arriving late; and being rude and disrespectful to lecturers鈥, according to her paper, 鈥溾娾楲ad Culture鈥 and Learning in Higher Education鈥.

鈥淪ome lecturers told alarming stories of aggressive and very antagonistic confrontations between lecturers and male students,鈥 it adds.

Presenting her paper at the annual conference of the Society for Research into Higher Education in Newport, Wales, in December, Professor Jackson said lecturers had to use 鈥渟hocking鈥 behaviour management techniques, such as the card system, something one 鈥渨ouldn鈥檛 even expect in secondary school鈥.

One student, Pete, described how the lads in his first year would indulge in 鈥渓oudness, messing about, giggling, laughing in classes and trying to get away with stuff and push the teacher as much as they could鈥.

Other students would chastise the 鈥渓ads鈥 for their behaviour, Professor Jackson鈥檚 research found. One lecturer, John, recalled a 鈥渧ery strong lass鈥 turning to the lads and saying: 鈥渨ill you shut the fuck up, I鈥檓 trying to learn鈥.

鈥淎nd they did鈥eer pressure gets them a lot more because suddenly they鈥檙e made to look fools by a girl,鈥 the lecturer said.

Another lecturer said the card system was used 鈥渂ecause football students understand this rule very well鈥, Professor Jackson recalled.

But the paper suggested that after the first year, the most disruptive students had been 鈥渨eeded out鈥 as many failed their first-year exams.

Last year the National Union of Students published That鈥檚 What She Said, a report on women鈥檚 experience of 鈥渓ad culture鈥 in universities, which documented boorish, heavy drinking, misogynist and homophobic behaviour by male students.

However, Professor Jackson鈥檚 research found almost no evidence of sexual harassment or 鈥渞ape-supportive attitudes鈥 by lads, and homophobia was 鈥渞arely mentioned鈥.
