Australian universities will compete for聽funds under the first tranche of聽the federal government鈥檚 research commercialisation plan.
Universities have been invited to聽apply for A$50聽million (拢27聽million) each to聽establish one of聽four 鈥渞esearch and industry hubs鈥 championing breakthroughs in聽鈥渃ritical national manufacturing priorities鈥 in聽areas including defence, space, clean energy, resources, food, beverages and medical products.
The 鈥淭railblazer Universities鈥 initiative is the first programme to emerge from a policy drive to boost the commercial returns from university research 鈥 education minister Alan Tudge鈥檚 priority for the sector.
鈥淥ur universities punch above their weight on pure basic research but lag in transforming research into breakthrough ideas, products and new businesses,鈥 Mr Tudge said. 鈥淲e want our universities to play a bigger role in our economy, working hand-in-glove with Australian businesses to develop the next generation of great Australian products and companies.

鈥淭his is the first in a series of complementary measures that will contribute to an environment that focuses university research activity towards the goal of commercialisation and national economic benefit,鈥 Mr Connolly said.
Representative group Universities Australia welcomed the money but expressed a desire for more contextual information. 鈥淯niversities have been working closely with government as they develop a research commercialisation plan, and we understand this announcement is part of that,鈥 said chief executive Catriona Jackson. 鈥淲e look forward to seeing further details of this initiative, as well as the government鈥檚 full research commercialisation plan.鈥
The details appear likely to be released piecemeal, with the government now on an election footing. 鈥淭his is the first initiative of the Morrison government鈥檚 research commercialisation agenda, with further announcements made in coming weeks,鈥 says a joint statement from prime minister Scott Morrison and several of his ministers.
鈥淲e鈥檙e putting our best minds to the task,鈥 Mr Morrison said. 鈥淲e鈥檙e focusing our researchers and business leaders on Australia鈥檚 national priorities to help secure our economic recovery.鈥

The government will consider expressions of interest for the new funding between November and January, before assessing more detailed business cases from shortlisted applicants between January and March. At least one regional university will be among the four institutions selected as 鈥渋nnovation trailblazers鈥, according to regionalisation minister Bridget McKenzie.
Applicants will be assessed on their 鈥渃ommercialisation readiness鈥, 鈥渋ndustry alignment鈥 and 鈥渞esearch capability to support a national manufacturing priority鈥 鈥 attributes most Australian universities already lay claim聽to.
The funding, allocated over four years, can be used to bankroll staff recruitment, commercialisation training, research infrastructure and new courses and industry partnerships.
