As global efforts toward sustainability accelerate, Singapore faces a growing demand for sustainable finance expertise. Singapore Management University (SMU), through the Singapore Green Finance Centre (SGFC), addresses this need head-on with its first Massive Open Online Course (MOOC), Introduction to Sustainability and Sustainable Finance

Developed by SGFC, an initiative of Singapore Management University and Imperial College London, this highly accessible and innovative course is offered to the public without charge. It lays the foundation for sustainable finance education and is designed to enhance the skill sets of both finance and non-finance professionals, applicable across sectors and geographies. Led by SGFC’s Professorial Research Fellow, Dr Rajiv Lall, the three-part module features interviews and case studies with over 20 subject matter experts, offering valuable insights into real-world challenges and opportunities.

A Global Platform for Green Skills

Introduction to Sustainability and Sustainable Finance has quickly established itself as a leading training resource for professionals seeking to build foundational knowledge in sustainable finance. With over 3,000 learners from more than 55 countries, the course has received strong demand and demonstrated international relevance. In support of SMU’s Overseas Centres in Jakarta, Bangkok, and Ho Chi Minh City, the course was translated into three languages (Bahasa Indonesia, Thai and Vietnamese), further broadening its reach and making high-quality sustainability education accessible to a diverse audience, particularly in ASEAN, a fast-growing regional trading bloc.

Reaching Decision-Makers at Every Level

One of the MOOC’s most compelling strengths is its broad appeal across all levels of an organisation. This is reflected in the diverse learner profiles it attracts.

This distribution highlights the course’s effectiveness in engaging not only senior leaders and decision-makers but also middle managers and frontline executives across various industries. The course covers various aspects of sustainable finance such as sustainability reporting, risk management, an exploration of carbon markets and decarbonisation strategies. By equipping professionals at all levels with essential Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) knowledge, the course fosters a structured approach to sustainability within organisations.

Transforming Organisational Practices

SGFC’s MOOC is more than a training programme—it is a catalyst for organisational change. By providing scalable, self-paced learning, it enables businesses and governments to upskill employees en masse, bridging knowledge gaps and fostering a shared sustainability mindset. Learners gain a better understanding of how to integrate ESG principles into daily operations, influencing both financial and leadership decisions, and helping their organisations embed sustainability into their core strategies and cultures. For those looking to deepen their capabilities, SGFC also offers a suite of the Institute of Banking and Finance Standards Training Scheme (IBF-STS) approved sustainable finance courses that support advanced upskilling across specialised topics.

Leading the Way in Sustainable Finance Education

SMU’s commitment to accessible and impactful education positions the university as a thought leader in the global sustainability movement. Introduction to Sustainability and Sustainable Finance exemplifies how academic institutions can drive workforce transformation and support the nation’s transition to a low-carbon, climate-resilient economy. By spotlighting this initiative, SMU is not only advancing green skills development but also inspiring businesses and other academic institutions to invest in scalable, practical solutions for a sustainable future.
