Hungarian higher education increased its participation to 12 universities in 探花视频’s World University Rankings, recording one new entrant.
In recent years, Hungary's government, policymakers and Ministry of Culture and Innovation have worked to strengthen, advance and promote Hungary’s higher education sector both domestically and internationally.
Key increases and improvements in the World University Rankings 2026 include:
- Hungary has doubled its representation in the World University Rankings from six universities in 2016 to 12 universities in the latest edition
- Pázmány Péter Catholic University enters the rankings for the first time
- Both Semmelweis University (251–300) and Obuda University (601–800) move up in their overall rankings’ bandings

Of Hungary's improved performance in the World University Rankings 2026, Phil Baty, THE’s chief global affairs officer, said:
“It has been a strong year of progress for Hungary in the World University Rankings 2026. The nation has increased its representation in the rankings and in addition has improved its overall average ranking score – with some eye-catching key milestones achieved to provide recognition of success on the world stage.
“Firstly, Hungary has increased its representation in the world rankings to 12 universities, up from just eight universities in 2020 and 11 last year – so a big congratulations to Pázmány Péter Catholic University for meeting the rigorous academic thresholds and academic standards to make its debut in the THE World University Rankings this year.
“Moreover, I can reveal that while they remain in the same ranking bands, both of Hungary’s top two universities, Semmelweis in the 251-300 band, and Obuda in the 601-800 band, have both risen up the rankings within their bands. With almost 2,200 universities ranked in the 2026 edition, and almost 100 more entrants this year, this progress amid intensifying global competition is commendable.
