Scientists are seen as cold, but they can foster a warmer front

Aaron Huertas offers advice on how to overcome perceptions of being cold but competent

Social psychologists Susan Fiske and Cydnee Dupree have听 that scientists have when it comes to how the public perceives their profession. But I think it鈥檚 a problem that scientists can easily address with a bit of foresight.

Fiske and Dupree measured听people鈥檚 impressions of different groups in society based on听competence听鈥 our smarts, skills and competitiveness 鈥 and warmth,听which can include our perceived sincerity and good-naturedness.

In this measure, scientists come across as听highly competent but not very warm. They have high status in society, people think, so they must be pretty good at what they do, but they鈥檙e听just not sure about why it matters to them. In fact, this听sort of cold-but-competent stereotype can provoke听, according to Fiske and Dupree鈥檚 research. Indeed, I would hazard that this is听probably one of the core emotional strains of anti-elitism and anti-intellectualism in public life.

Conversely, check out doctors, nurses, teachers and professors. They鈥檙e competent and warm, in the public鈥檚 estimation. That stereotype provokes feelings of admiration, which is probably a lot closer to where science communicators would want to see 鈥渟cientists鈥 on this chart, especially if they care about public trust in science.

So what鈥檚 the difference here? I think people intuitively understand听why听doctors and nurses do what they do. They save lives, and doing that sort of work requires some pretty obvious compassion and empathy for people.

Teachers teach. They love their students. Professors鈥rofess, and they鈥檙e often motivated by passing on knowledge to the next generation, too.听But what do scientists do, generally speaking?听Well, science. And听that doesn鈥檛 tell the public much.

In a lot of public communication, I see scientists lead with their听science and their methods and their expertise, but they don鈥檛 mention听why听they do what they do. Helping audiences understand听that 鈥渨hy鈥 is so important. As Nasa鈥檚 Gavin Schmidt has听, failing to convey motivations to an audience means that people will fill in the blank with the nearest stereotype they have on hand.

So researchers and science communicators who want to come across as a little warmer, a little more听admired and, yes, a little more credible and relatable with audiences should consider the following:

Be personal

Ten听or 20 years into a scientific career 鈥 or heck, even at the end of a PhD programme 鈥 scientists听sometimes find it difficult to hark back to why they got started down their career path in the first place.

Maybe it was nature walks they听took when they听were kids. Maybe they had听an amazing teacher. Maybe they听were always blown away by big machinery. Or, like a lot of nerds, perhaps it was Star Trek听that did it. (Raises hand...)

In every scientist鈥檚 life, there is听some point or series of points at which they decided to dedicate themselves to difficult, sometimes tedious work, to discover new things. Finding that moment 鈥 even if it鈥檚 something you fell into 鈥 is so important for connecting with audiences.

Be curious

Most scientists got into the field听because they were intrinsically fascinated by something. They were the kids who collected bugs in jars, who took the toaster apart and surprised their parents with dangerous birthday wish lists. (鈥淏ut it鈥檚 just a chemistry set, mom!鈥)

, an award-winning science communicator, likes to use the example of researchers听who get dropped off in frigid听polar wastes听to study the climate. Are they doing that for the grant money? Or because it makes them the queen or king of the cryosphere?听No way. You have to be pretty damn curious to take a trip like that.

Be transparent

Why are you giving a talk, testifying before a committee or releasing a paper to the media? What鈥檚 your goal? For scientists, it鈥檚 usually to inform. They want people to be able to use research to guide the everyday choices they make, whether it鈥檚 what kind of medicine they use or what kind of food they buy. And on the policy front, scientists want to make sure that听political leaders听can make decisions based on the best science.听For scientists working on commercial products, it can also be to provide a service, grow a business or attract investors to a听new innovation.

Scientists should always be upfront with audiences about what they鈥檙e doing, why, and who is supporting their work. They also have to self-reflect: sometimes scientists engage in public communication as an extension of听competition within the scientific community or听because they really think they know better than everybody else. Those are unhealthy premises from which to take on science communication work, and they can easily backfire, not just with the public, but with one鈥檚 colleagues too, especially when scientists leave their disciplinary lane.

Be real

All these points have to be genuine and to come across as genuine. Audiences can sense something fake or manipulative a mile away. So, for instance, scientists shouldn鈥檛听namecheck the local sports team when giving a public talk unless they really love that team. And if a scientist wants to听invoke something general like being a parent, they should back that up with specific examples that are about them and their kid.听It鈥檚 those detailed, specific stories听that stick with audiences.

Fill in the blank

Helping audiences to fill in these blanks can be a huge favour. If a scientist can get it down to a minute, that might be the 鈥渆levator pitch鈥 for their work. These stories are also good openers for talks and testimony. And they鈥檙e great fodder for personal websites and sprucing up dusty听faculty pages.

They can also be worth sharing on their own merits, as the growing听听series has proven. And importantly, when scientists think deeply about why they really do what they听do, it can also听听about their听own work听that help them听conceptualise new avenues for research.听That鈥檚 right: all this fuzzy听stuff about storytelling, narrative and audience can help researchers do better science, too!

Cross-posting this comment I just added from my site (and converting F to C!): John Kotcher at GMU鈥檚 Center for Climate Change Communication pointed me to this discussion of some of the study鈥檚 limitations and how it was initially presented in the press: http://www.scilogs.com/from_the_lab_bench/scientists-we-do-trust-you-even-if-you-could-be-a-little-warmer/ Indeed, I found that a lot of scientists look at the main chart shared above and point out that their profession is actually above-average on warmth. So it might be fairer to talk about scientists as being competent and kind of warm (perhaps akin to a 12 degree day!). Regardless, the big takeaway here in my mind is that scientists are borderline on warmth: if they come across as too cold, they can provoke envious reactions, but if they come across a little more warmly, they鈥檙e likely to provoke reactions of admiration.
